Every September, the Met Office in the UK announces the new storm names for the year ahead, so take this years’ announcement as a reminder to inspect your property before the winter weather arrives. We’ve put together a checklist on how to stay ahead of the storms and prepare your premises for winter with commercial roofing inspections, so check your roof and call us in for any repairs that are needed this September.
Inspecting Your Commercial Roofing
If you have recently noticed an issue with your roof but you are unable to identify the cause, or you are unsure of what you need to be looking out for, then don’t let this stop you from giving your roof the attention that it needs ahead of a stormy winter.
Whether you take a look at your roof every week or once every few months, it is important that you are familiar with its appearance and overall condition, so take a look at the common issues that your current roof could be facing:
1. Leaks
Whilst this might seem very obvious, if you or your team notice any drips of water falling from above, it is important that you don’t ignore them. Even if this is just a one-off occurrence, a reliable waterproof roof shouldn’t be letting any water droplets in, so take this as an indication that the roof has become damaged or cracked.
2. Cracks
Your roofs’ structure may begin to crack over time under the weight of heavy snow or rainfall, particularly if it is flat. So, keep an eye on any bulges that form after stormy weather and any cracks that begin to show over time, and if your team mentions being able to feel any cold air whilst they are indoors, then this is likely due to cracks around the seals.
3. Damage to Shingles
To properly inspect the shingles you will need to climb up and take a look at the roof, but you can also assess their condition by monitoring any granules that have become detached from the tiles. A few granules falling into the gutters are not too much of a concern, but if your tiles often lose a lot of granules, particularly after rain, then this could be a sign that they are wearing away and need to be replaced.
4. Unpleasant Odours
If your team has recently started to notice odd or damp smells around the premises then it’s a good idea to check the roof, as this could be the smell of mould growing due to a leak or crack.
5. Damp Patches
There should never be any signs of leaks or damp around your ceiling or on the underside of the roof. These areas should be dry at all times and warm whilst the heating is on, so be sure to include them in your seasonal checks and if you notice even small indications of these issues, it’s time to call us in.
